Alicia’s earth

6 pm

After visiting Owen’s grandmother’s grave, Alicia was sitting in the dining table of the Bell mansion, her home. Alongside her was her mother who was sitting to her right, her father to her left, and Owen, who was reluctant to be invited but her father insisted on it, opposite to her.

By the way, when Alicia and co. got back to the mansion, the old driver driving the limo that was hijacked was sobbing with snots in worry when Alicia got kidnapped. As to Alicia’s mother, she wasn’t too worried as she believed Owen would bring her to safety. She hugged Alicia the first thing she sees he though.

“Tell me father, why did you never tell me about this?”

At the question Alicia gave, her father, Ronald stared at her for a moment before putting down his spoon on the plate and answered.

“Erm… let’s say it is due to the nature of the work itself.”

Hearing this, Alicia asks again.

“Why is that so?”

“Basically its about the chances of becoming one,” Ronald explained, “You see, having the mere knowledge of it increases your chance of becoming a wizard and I don’t want you to become one. Its dangerous work.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Hmm. I know! lets say a small foreign object from outer space lands to earth.”

“And?”

“That foreign object latches on to a person and gives them strange powers. Wizards are basically that.”

“I think I understand. But then where do this ‘foreign object’ come from and where does it latch onto?”

“As to where ‘it’ come from that will be from the world where Otherworldly Court resides and as to where ‘it’ latches onto, it would be the person’s soul directly.”

“The soul?”

“Well at least that’s what we think it is.”

“I see I think I understand.”

“Right, since you now know this, I need you to know what I am going to tell you. Its a rule that the court decided upon and it is also important for you to be aware of it. Listen closely.”

“Alright.”

As Alicia lean closer to listen what Ronald said were controversial.

“In addition to giving us magic ‘it’ also interfere with other things namely our mind.”

“Our mind?”

“Its only mild though, as far as we know its only two things: bond between wizards and the ability to keep calm in the face of danger. You may not realize it, but you are rather calm during the whole conversation, am I right?”

Hearing it, Alicia realized. She has been too calm in the entire fiasco. She was kidnapped and she was scared but not at a scale a normal high school girl should be nor when what Owen did to the two criminals and literally travel to another world. Any normal person would have freak out but Alicia was rather too calm in spite all of this.

She was a generally calm person but not this calm.

“As I said. Its nothing too serious but you should at least be aware of it.”

“I see. I got it.”

“Right then, as I mention about the Otherworldly Court it is an organisation where we, called ‘Court Wizard’, from all over the infinite possible worlds, our homes, and protect them but, we mostly watch over it and only influence it very little. There are a lot of worlds and there are too few Court Wizards.”

“Too few?”

“Every generation of Court Wizards only average about 50 in numbers with its peak at 100 or so. Its too little.”

“Really?”

“Also we don’t force you to do this although its pointless.”

“Why is it pointless?”

“Even if  you don’t  want to, by fate, ‘it’ always pulls you back to the Otherworldly Court. You can ‘officially retire from duty’ and two or three years your back. Heck, I’m supposed to be retired as a Court Wizard and I still occasionally come back and do Court duties. Even if your reason of being a wizard is fulfilled.”

“What do you mean by reason?”

“Its exactly as it sounds, the reason of keep on being a Court Wizard since it is not force upon.”

“I see, so then what is your reason, father?”

“Hmm, a family tradition to go out to different worlds and learn from them.”

“Eh?”

“It started from the founder of Bell Conglomerate hundred years ago. He himself was a Court Wizard too, at that time he was pretty much penniless, and so keep on being a Court Wizard as he doesn’t have anywhere to go.

He went to many worlds, learning values and hardships along the way. He learned a lot, especially marketing which is how he came back here and started the Bell Company and build the company into success in a single generation. Afterwards he decided to make it so every time the descendants of the Bell family becomes a Court Wizard, they do the same as him.”

“That is surprising. Then Owen wha-”

Before Alicia finished her sentenced Owen answered with an empty plate. He had finished his meal while the two talk.

“Dad.”

Just one simple word.

Ronald then explained.

“Owen’s father is also a Court Wizard too. we were partners back in our day. It was six years ago, we were on a mission in a certain world when a portal leading to another world not from the Court’s teleporter suddenly appear and whisked him away and we have never found him since.”

“But then couldn’t he just used a telepathy magic or something? I saw Owen do it.”

“Erm… its not so simple. You see, if a Court Wizard travels to another world with means not using the method the Court uses, that person would temporarily lose their ability to use magic and in under circumstances, will be difficult to regain it which is why an event like this is dangerous.”

“I see…”

“But nevertheless, he is definitely alive somewhere. The Court can know when a Court Wizard dies no matter where that Wizard is. So we can safely say that he is still alive.”

“So then Owen, your reason is…”

“To find Dad. Though there’s not a single clue to where he is. So right now I’m just randomly hopping worlds and hopefully find him.”

“I see…”

The atmosphere glooms… until Ronald said.

“I should tell you this now that you know about this, er… its about your mother.”

“Mother?”

“Your mother is actually from another world. An aristocrat on top of that.”

“I see… W-what!?”

“It’s about the chances of becoming one,” Ronald explained, “You see, having the mere knowledge of it increases your chance of becoming a wizard and I don’t want you to become one. It’s not the best kind of work.”

“I do not understand.”

“Hmm. I know! let’s say a small foreign object from outer space lands to earth.”

“I see…”

“But nevertheless, he is definitely alive somewhere. The Otherworldly Court can know when a Court Wizard dies no matter where that Wizard is. So we can safely say that he is still alive. I have been searching for him until Owen became a Court Wizard. I gave the task to him as he should do it as my longtime partner’s son.”

“I see.” Alicia turned to Owen. “Then have you any luck finding your father, Owen?”

“No,” Owen said. “There’s not a single clue to where he is. Right now I’m just randomly hopping worlds and hopefully find him.”

“How long have you been a Court Wizard?”

“Five years.”

“I see…”

The atmosphere gloom…

“Right,” Ronald said. “You are a Court Wizard now, my daughter. And there is no way to change it back as much as I want to. So, I need you to accept what I am about to tell you next.”

“Tell me what, father?” Alicia asked.

“The Otherworldly Court is an organization that deals in the safety of worlds and they take it seriously. We, Court Wizards, will go any lengths to achieve it. That means we will do anything to protect the existence of every world. I am sure you understand what that means?”

Yes, Alicia knows what her father meant. She had read enough literature to have an idea about it. The Otherworldly Court is willing to do dirty work if it means the safety of worlds. Even though the ‘foreign object’ is messing with her mind, she was still hesitating.

“Ah, but I as your father won’t allow you to do ‘that’ for now,” her father added. “We are not one to immediately subject new Court Wizards to do such a thing. We are not that cruel.”

“I see.” That cleared her hesitation. Even if the Otherworldly Court do ‘that’, her childhood friend, Owen, still stayed. Her father, Ronald, must have stayed for years before ‘retiring’. Also, she would like to help Owen in search of his father, two pair of eyes are better than one. She is also curious about what the Otherworldly Court has to offer.

“Alright then,” Alicia spoke, “I accept.”

“Wonderful!” Ronald cheered. “Then I welcome you to the Otherworldly Court.”

With the mood going back up, Ronald then told another secret.

“I should tell you this now that you know all about this.” Ronald looked at his wife, Alicia’s mother, who stopped eating her dinner and looked at her husband with a nod. “It’s about your mother.”

“What about my mother?” Alicia asked. Do not tell me mother is a Court Wizard too.

Clearing his throat, Ronald said with haste, “your mother is actually from another world. An aristocrat on top of that.”

“I see… W-what!?”
